بفضل أغنياتها المثالية مثل "جراسياس الا فيدا" اي شكرا للحياة حظيت سوسا باشادة في الخارج واكتسبت شعبية كبيرة في الداخل.
وعلى مدى اربعة عقود من غناء الالحان الشعبية اصبحت مرسيدس سوسا اكثر اصوات جيلها تمثيلا لاميركا اللاتينية.
غنت سوسا في عدد من أكبر المسارح في العالم وقامت بجولات غنائية في أوروبا والبرازيل والولايات المتحدة لكن مشاكل صحية اضطرتها للتوقف عن الغناء عام 2003 ثم عادت لتصدر اخر ألبوماتها الغنائية عام 2005.
ولدت سوسا بشمال الارجنتين لعائلة مختلطة فرنسية وهندية اميركية وفي سن الخامسة عشرة فازت بمسابقة غناء نظمتها اذاعة محلية.
مزجت المغنية الراحلة في اغانيها بين الالحان الشعبية لاميركا اللاتينية والكلمات التقدمية ذات الصبغة السياسية. وكانت عضوا بالحزب الشيوعي.
وفي عام 1979 اضطرت للهرب الى أوروبا بعد حظر أغانيها واعتقالها مع كل الحاضرين أثناء حفل موسيقي أقيم في مدينة لابلاتا الارجنتينية. عادت سوسا الى الارجنتين عام 1982 قبل سقوط الحكم العسكري وأكسبتها أغانيها جمهورا جديدا من الشبان.
اصدرت المغنية الراحلة 40 البوما كثير منها بالاشتراك مع مغنين آخرين من اميركا اللاتينية ومع مطربين عالميين مثل تشارلي جارسيا وساندرو. والبومها الاخير "كانتورا 1" مرشح لثلاث جوائز لاتينية.
توفيت فى أكتوبر 2009 عن عمر يناهز 74 عاماً.
